Robert DeNiro, who is also the co-founder for the Tribeca Film Festival, stuck with his decision to show the controversial anti-vaccine documentary, Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe. In an interview DeNiro said:
“[My wife] Grace and I have a child with autism and we believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined,” the statement reads. “This is very personal to me and my family and I want there to be a discussion, which is why we will be screening Vaxxed. I am not personally endorsing the film, nor am I anti-vaccination; I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue.”
The one thing that can’t be denied is autism is defiantly on the rise. Any studies and open talk that lead to finding the cause is worth while in my book. Many experts think that the rapid increase can only be caused by an environmental component. Some studies also suggest that the outward signs of autism may show up in children around the time they get major courses of vaccines but the condition may have already been inherent before the child was born. When science has yet to answer the question of why so many children have to suffer, the rapid backlash against those working to study possible causes seems a little premature.
Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks, in a statement on the organizations website says “vaccines are very important” and “parents must make the decision whether to vaccinate their children.”
He also states, “If parents decide not to vaccinate they must be aware of the consequences in their community and their local schools.”
